Incentives

All three levels of government provide attractive regional incentive programs. These include:

  • Grants;
  • Incentive term loans;
  • Tax-abatement programs (such as Brownfield Community Improvement & Downtown Community Improvement Plans);
  • Exemptions from development charges on industrial projects; and
  • Accelerated permit approvals.

In addition, the region is made extremely competitive by offering:

  • Generous wage support programs;
  • Funding for R&D activities including tax credits; and
  • Financial support for capital projects involving building and/or equipment.  

Provincial

NOHFC (Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation)

The Northern Ontario Heritage Fund providing up to 50% to a guideline maximum of $1 million on capital expenditures, leasehold improvements, staff training, marketing, euqipment purchases and land servicing with up to one half of the funding in the form of a conditional grant with the remainder in the form of a repayable loan. NOHFC also provides internship programs. Additionally, there are incentive programs for R&D, Apprenticeship Tax Credit, and wage subsidies.

Next Generation of Jobs Fund

The Next Generation of Jobs Fund is a five year, $1.15 billion strategy that can help innovative companies take the lead in worldwide markets which offer long-term growth potential.  Grants up to 15% of eligible project costs are available to support companies making new investments that help establish Ontario as a global leader in emerging markets.

AMIS (Advanced Manufacturing Investment Strategy)

The $500 million AMIS program provides repayable loans, interest free for up to five years, to encourage companies to invest in leading-edge technologies and processes

Federal 

FedNor

FedNor is an initiative of the Government of Canada which works with numerous partners, and through its programs and services. FedNor helps fund community projects as well as private sector initiatives designed to improve the economic and social well-being of the North as a whole. FedNor also provides internship programs.
